In an era where healthcare technology is advancing at a lightning pace, the role of nurses has evolved tremendously. I’m Basanti Baga Pradhan, an AHPRA Registered Nurse, and today, I want to discuss how we, as nurses, can strike a balance between utilizing cutting-edge technology and maintaining the personal touch at the heart of patient care.

The Rise of Technology in Nursing: My experience in various healthcare settings, especially at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Northern Hospital Epping, has shown me the incredible impact of technology in nursing. Technology has streamlined many processes, improving patient outcomes and efficiency, from electronic health records to telehealth services. However, this reliance on technology also brings a challenge – ensuring that it doesn’t overshadow the human aspect of nursing.

Personal Experiences: I often use EMR software to manage patient data during my shifts. While this technology is indispensable for accuracy and quick access to patient history, I always make sure that it doesn’t reduce my interaction time with patients. For instance, while updating records on the computer, I engage in conversations with my patients, ensuring they feel heard and cared for.

Maintaining the Human Connection: The essence of nursing lies in empathy and human connection. Despite the convenience of technology, the comfort a patient feels when a nurse holds their hand or offers a word of encouragement is irreplaceable. Therefore, balancing tech-savviness with empathy is crucial. It’s about integrating technology into our care in a way that it enhances rather than replaces the personal interactions that patients value so much.

As we navigate through the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare technology, let’s remind ourselves of the importance of the human touch in nursing. We must use technology as a tool to aid our care, not as a barrier between us and our patients. The art of nursing lies in this balance, and as nurses, we are uniquely positioned to blend the science of medicine with the art of human care.
